Much like the diverse array of people in the world, a variety of heating system options are available for your home, reflecting everything from the age of your home to your personal tastes.

  • You like to force the issue.
    • Commonly used, forced air systems like furnaces and heaters burn natural gas, propane, oil, or use electricity to heat your home, propelling heated air through your home with the help of a blower and ductwork.
  • You’re all pumped up.
    • In moderate climates, electric heat pumps allow you to both heat and cool the air in your home. Working much like your refrigerator, heat pumps transfer heat from the climate outdoors inside your home in the winter (and vice versa in the summer). Heat pumps typically move conditioned air through ductwork like forced systems; though ductless versions are also available.
  • You like things wrapped up in a neat little package.
    • For those with OCD – or limited space – electric or gas powered packaged units combine both heating and cooling capabilities, eliminating the need to make space for a separate furnace, coil, or air handler indoors. Various configurations are available, including packaged air conditioners, heat pumps, dual fuel, and gas electric varieties.
  • You’re under pressure.
    • Boilers are comprised of a furnace for heating, and a vessel that turns water into steam, pressurizing it and distributing it through your home for via various mechanisms (see below). They can be powered by electricity, natural gas, propane, or oil.
  • You like to dig deep.
    • Geothermal, earth-coupled, ground-source, or water-source heat pumps work similarly to traditional heat pumps. Instead of using the air outside for heat exchange, they are dug into the ground, where they can take advantage of the constant temperature of the earth.
