Commercial Heat Pump Installation and Replacement

If you’re a business owner eager to cut down on your carbon footprint and reduce energy costs, consider heat pump installation. Heat pumps are an excellent, cost-effective solution to heating a busy commercial space. If your business doesn’t have access to a gas supply, a ground-source heat pump can save you thousands of dollars a year on energy costs.

Heat pumps are efficient at moving heat from one place to another. Some models require a small amount of electrical energy to transfer ambient heat in the ground or the air inside. They can be used at high temperatures for underfloor heating and radiators and can even help maintain a hot water supply. Other varieties rely on the ground as an abundant source of free heat. Whatever type you choose, it’s important to have professional heat pump installers complete the job to ensure it gets done right the first time.

The Benefits of Heat Pumps

While the initial cost of heat pump installation can be pricey, business owners will see significant savings on their electricity bills. Those with heat pumps may also benefit from federal and provincial tax credits and rebates that can help reduce the cost of installation. Best of all, a heat pump can provide your commercial space with heat for up to 25 years. Heat pumps can also improve air quality, are quiet, and provide a consistently well-controlled climate.

Commercial Heat Pump Installations

Installing a heat pump starts with locating a place for the main unit. Ideally, it should be sheltered and in a safe place where it won’t be exposed to harsh weather conditions.. A basic wall-mounted heat pump requires approximately 200 mm of clearance, but more space is typically required for commercial models.

Installation requires indoor and outdoor space, so ensure there is sufficient space inside your business, too. Once the indoor and outdoor units are mounted, refrigerant and drain hose pipes are connected and insulated. The system will then be connected to your radiator or boiler.

Ground source heat pumps require a little extra effort. Horizontal ground pipes are buried at least 100 metres deep. The pipes feed into the heat pump in the building, which is then connected back to the existing heating supply using an air-source heat pump. While you may be hesitant about the initial heat pump installation costs, it’s important to consider the cost savings associated with this type of heating. The initial investment can pay for itself in just a few years.

Commercial Heat Pump Repairs and Replacement

To prevent malfunctions, costly repairs, and keep your heat pump running efficiently all year long, schedule regular service appointments with a trusted HVAC professional.

Your local Aire Serv has maintenance plans that make it easy for business owners to keep their heat pump equipment in the best condition possible.

As with any system, over time, heat pump issues may arise.. If your unit is not producing heat, here are some things to check:

  • Ensure the power is on.
  • Check the circuit breaker (to confirm it hasn’t been tripped).
  • Make sure the thermostat has power.
  • Check for ice buildup on the interior and exterior units.
  • Make sure air vents are not blocked.

Once you confirm the power supply, circuit breaker  and the thermostat are not the problem, try replacing the batteries in your thermostat. If your heat pump is on but not producing heat or airflow, check again for ice buildup on the unit. Also confirm air vents are not blocked by plants, furniture, curtains, or other obstacles. If your commercial heat pump won’t cycle off, check for refrigerant leaks and  poorly insulated windows and/or indoors. If everything checks out okay, a heat pump compressor replacement may be necessary. However, regularly scheduled maintenance can help business owners avoid such a repair.
