How Do Heat Pumps Work?

Heat pumps are essentially “heat movers.” These machines have an indoor and an outdoor unit equipped with a heat exchanger. One machine will move heat to the other, with fans in either machine blowing out air (or sucking it in). Using liquid refrigerant to efficiently absorb and transfer heat, these machines are incredibly efficient. Their use of electricity is far more effective and efficient than other electric-powered heaters.

The science behind their design also all allows for a powerful heat pump advantage: a heat pump can both heat and cool your home! The direction that the heat moves within a heat pump can be reversed. As a result, you can move heat from the inside of your home and expel it, or bring heat outside your home indoors. For geographic locations with moderate temperatures, this is a great option (though perhaps more costly than other heating options initially).

  • Inspect your air filter, Check out your air filters once a month. Dirty filters always need to be cleaned or replaced. Clogged filters can overstress your system, leading to more costly damage down the road (as well as a less efficient system).

  • Keep it clean. Do your best to keep the individual parts of your AC unit clean and tidy. Using a shop vac to clear away dirt and other debris in your unit and ducts is a fairly quick and easy way to do this. Wipe things down when you can, and make this a regular practice.

  • Give the unit some breathing room. Your unit should have a lot of clearance around it, especially for outdoor units. Brush away dirt or mud, prune branches and bushes, and in general just keep the area clear. It makes your yard look attractive and protects your unit from contaminants.
